Kick Returns
By Elizabeth Petersen

People needed: Backs or whole team

Purpose: To learn how to effectively field kicks and to promote support on the counter attack

Directions:

1. All players should line up on the endline.

2. One player (or coach) should kick the ball as far as she can from the endline. Three players should run on to the ball.

3. The first player to the ball should collect the ball as cleanly as she can and start running back to the endline to simulate a counterattack.

4. The other two players should look to support the runner, one on each side (essentially forming a triangle).

5. The three player unit should run back to the endline, and the next group should go.

6. Once all players are comfortable with collecting the ball and starting a counterattack, add opposition: Players should break up in groups of three. When the ball is kicked, TWO teams of three should run after the ball. The first team to reach the ball is on offense, and the other team is on defense. The offensive team should look to support one another, make clean passes, and communicate. The defensive team should look to attack as a flat line in a unit and make quick, low tackles.
