We all have our reasons for playing rugby. Whether it's the physical activity, love of the sport, or camaraderie, rugby adds something positive to our lives. However, there are some times when rugby affords us with the opportunity to give back to the community at large.

The Ruggers Against Rape Tournament is a prime example of rugby with a social-conscious bent. The University of Vermont-hosted tourney, now in its eighth year, will be held on April 30th, 2005, in Burlington, VT.

"The team works closely with the Burlington Women's Rape Crisis Center," says Jennifer Duffy, UVM's tournament coordinator. "Every year we march with them at their "Take Back the Night" march and we do crowd control at their Mardi Gras event. They have an information table at our tournament, and they are given a great deal of the proceeds from the tournament."

This year's tournament will start on April 30th, with games from 9-4, and will conclude on May 1st. The tournament typically features 8 to 10 clubs. In 2004, the tournament raised $400 for the Crisis Center.

"This tournament helps us become a more recognizable team," say Duffy. "It also allows us to have a fun weekend with our fellow [New England Rugby Football Union] teams and be able to donate a big check to the Crisis Center."

If your club is considering staging a similar tournament, there are a number of charity organizations that could be potential beneficiaries. Most areas have a local women's crisis center. Or, consider contacting your local chapter of the National Organization of Women (NOW) and asking them for local women's organizations.

You can also consider supporting your local branch of the American Cancer Society or Red Cross.

There are thousands of non-profit organizations out there that could use our help. By holding a charity tournament, your team will gain exposure, compete against quality teams, and be able to use rugby as a vehicle to raise social awareness and donate money to a worthy cause.
