TALES FROM THE TOUCHLINE

4 1/2 WEEKS, PART 3

THE END… AND THE BEGINNING

24TH September 2005

So… how did it go, you ask?

The new match shirts arrived the day on the Friday… and turned out to be just a touch smaller than we expected, the new kit suppliers definition of 38” being somewhat less generous the old one!

Apparently – since the World Cup – skin-tight shirts are all the rage. The only teeny snag is that clearly no-one has told rugby shirt manufacturers that girls dimensions can be subtly different to boys. When there is a bit of latitude in measurements this doesn’t matter much – when there isn’t it sort-of does, Anyway, this will run and run but all I will say is that when you next order new shirts (especially from English suppliers) BEWARE!

We woke up on Sunday to the sound of driving rain – but it was clearing by the trime we set off, and the sun was out when we reached the north end of Buckinghamshire. Having negotiated 654 roundabouts (well, it felt like that – Letchworth may have invented this particular form of traffic management system, but Milton Keynes has gone totally over the top on it) we arrived at the ground in glorious sunshine.

So – perfect conditions. Soft underfoot, but warm air and little wind.

Milton Keynes had played Welwyn the previous week and now had rather fewer players than they had hoped for. Indeed we outnumbered them about two to one, so the U14s were split into two for two games and the while we gave a few girls to them for the U17 game. In the circumstances the U17s 37-10 win was no real surprise.

The U14s, on the other hand, were almost all entering a new world. They lost both games, but against significantly more experienced (and rather bigger!) opponents it was a creditable performance. Especially from one girl who literally joined us that morning and, following a crash course in rugby basics, played in the second game and even scored a try. A good “find”!

And so the morning ended. We are off and running – only eight months training, county and regional trials, four festivals plus a dozen other fixtures, maybe a tour, a couple of cups to go…
